WEG ADV200 variable speed drive supplied in Singapore by Trans-Digi Global as an authorised WEG distributor

Buying WEG drives through an authorised channel gets you four things a price list cannot: genuine, current-generation product, a manufacturer warranty that will be honoured, technical escalation to WEG when a question goes beyond the datasheet, and the documentation a Singapore tender or as-built submission needs. This guide explains why that matters for drives in particular, what WEG equipment we supply, and how to choose between the ranges.

In this article

WEG describes itself as one of the largest manufacturers of electric motors, electronic equipment and systems, with more than 47,000 employees worldwide (WEG ADV200 brochure). Trans-Digi Global supplies WEG drives in Singapore and, as our partners page states, everything we sell comes through authorised channels, with the documentation to prove it.

Why the supply channel matters more for drives than for most products

A variable speed drive (VSD) is not a passive component. It is a power-electronics product with firmware, parameter sets, option cards and safety functions. Three consequences follow:

  • Warranty depends on traceability. A manufacturer can only stand behind a unit it can trace through its own channel.
  • Support depends on access. Drive questions often need the manufacturer: a parameter behaviour, a firmware version, an option-card compatibility. Our partners page lists “technical escalation to the manufacturer when needed” as one of the things an authorised channel provides.
  • Safety claims depend on the exact build. The ADV200, for example, offers a Safe Torque Off (STO) function certified to SIL 3 under IEC 61508 and PL e under ISO 13849-1 on its +SI models, per the WEG ADV200 brochure. A safety function is only as credible as the certificate that matches the unit installed.

Drive-system ratings are specified under IEC 61800-2, and drives are also covered by their own product-safety standard, IEC 61800-5-1, which addresses electrical, thermal, fire, mechanical and energy hazards. Submissions in Singapore often ask for the declarations and test evidence behind such claims, which is why our partners page commits to “supporting documentation available for tender submissions”.

Our partners page also lists the WEG CFW500 general-purpose drive and the SSW07 compact soft starter, “a strong, pragmatic option where a modular plug-in format and integrated bypass suit the panel.”

ADV200 or TPD500? Choosing between AC and DC

Most new installations use AC induction or permanent-magnet motors with an AC drive such as the WEG ADV200. The DC motor still has a place: the US Department of Energy’s motor and drive system sourcebook notes that DC motors have excellent speed and torque control and are often used when high torque at low speed is required, with speed ranges of up to 20:1.

That is why plants with DC motors in good condition often modernise the drive rather than the whole drive train. WEG positions the TPD500 for “both new system architectures and the modernisation of existing installations” (WEG TPD500 brochure). Its features include encoder or tachogenerator feedback, a motor thermistor input, I²t drive and motor protection, and programmable linear and S ramps.

Quick selection guide

  1. Identify the motor type. AC induction or PM motor: ADV200 (or CFW500 for simpler duties). DC motor: TPD500.
  2. Define the duty. Note whether the load is heavy duty (high starting torque, frequent overloads) or normal duty, and whether it regenerates (lowering, braking, unwinding).
  3. Decide on feedback. Closed-loop speed or torque accuracy needs an encoder option card on the ADV200 or encoder/tacho feedback on the TPD500.
  4. Check safety functions. If the machine’s risk assessment calls for STO, specify the ADV200 +SI model.
  5. Confirm supply and environment: voltage class, panel ventilation and enclosure rating (the ADV200 is IP20).
  6. List the communication protocol the control system uses so the right fieldbus card is ordered.

How to evaluate a WEG supplier

Whoever you buy from, these questions separate a supply partner from a price:

  • Can they show the supply chain? Ask how the product reaches them and what documentation comes with it.
  • Can they help you select, not just quote? A drive specified only by kW often ends up wrong on duty, feedback or options.
  • Do they hold local stock or know the lead time? Ask before you commit to a programme date.
  • Do they cover the whole job? Installation support, testing and commissioning, and after-sales help.
  • Will the paperwork stand up? Datasheets, declarations and as-built documents for your submission.

How we work

Our approach is set out on our partners page, and it is the same for WEG as for the other ranges we carry:

  • Named-brand specifications supplied as specified.
  • Equivalents offered with the reasoning stated, never substituted silently.
  • Lead-time impact flagged before you commit.
  • Consistent device families across a panel where possible, and standardisation advice to simplify your spares holding.

Our ADV200 and TPD500 product pages list local Singapore stock, as-built documentation and same-business-day response. We support panel builders, M&E contractors and consultants with product selection, sizing, testing and commissioning. Since 2021 we have served more than 80 customers (About us).

Much of our project work is replacement of existing drives in operating buildings. Our published project references are Himel installations, but they show the retrofit discipline we bring to any brand: at Singapore EXPO the new drives were configured to run motors more than ten years old, and at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal a compact drive footprint simplified replacement within the existing space and reduced cabling cost.

What to send for a fast, accurate WEG quotation

Drive quotations go wrong when the request is just a kW figure. Our product pages list what we need to confirm a selection:

For an ADV200 (AC)For a TPD500 (DC)
Motor type (induction or permanent magnet) and nameplate dataMotor armature voltage and current
Feedback requirement (open loop or encoder)Feedback device (tachogenerator or encoder)
Supply voltageOperating quadrants (2B or regenerative 4B)
Communication protocol of the control systemField (excitation) current
Duty: normal or heavy, and any safety function neededWhether it is a new system or a retrofit of an existing DC drive
Based on the ordering notes on our ADV200 and TPD500 product pages and the WEG brochures.

A photo of the motor nameplate and the existing drive label is often the quickest start, especially on a retrofit.

Frequently asked questions

Which WEG products does Trans-Digi Global supply?

The ADV200 AC drive and TPD500 DC converter, plus the CFW500 general-purpose drive and SSW07 compact soft starter. See our WEG brand page.

Why does buying through an authorised channel matter?

It keeps the product traceable to the manufacturer, which is what makes the warranty, technical escalation and documentation dependable.

Can you replace an old DC drive with a TPD500?

The TPD500 is designed for both new systems and the modernisation of existing DC installations. Send us the motor voltage, current, feedback device and operating quadrants and we will check the fit.

What is Safe Torque Off?

STO is a safety function that removes torque-producing power from the motor without disconnecting the supply. On the ADV200 +SI models it is certified SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PL e (ISO 13849-1), per WEG.

What power range does the ADV200 cover?

From 0.75 kW to 1.65 MW for the 400 V class (ADV200-4), and from 160 kW to 1.65 MW for the 690 V class (ADV200-6), per the WEG brochure.

Do you provide commissioning?

Yes. Our scope covers supply, installation support, testing and commissioning. Contact us with the motor data and application.

Specify WEG with confidence

Send us the WEG model, or the motor data and application, and we will confirm the right product, options and local availability, usually the same business day. Browse the WEG range, our services, or contact us.
